Unlocking the Potential of Cashew Apples: Partner Training

The cashew apple, a nutrient-rich product of the cashew tree, holds immense potential for economic growth and improved nutrition in Nigeria. However, a substantial portion of these apples is wasted due to post-harvest losses and underutilization. To address this challenge and unlock the value of cashew apples, a training program was organized to enhance value addition, increase utilization, and stimulate demand for cashew apple products in Nigeria. The training took place at the Iwo town, in the Osun State in Nigeria at the De Royal Premium Inn.

35 participants made up of 29 females and 6 males received training on various aspects of cashew apple utilization. This included detailed sessions on post-harvest handling, nutritional benefits and food safety, entrepreneurship, marketing, and branding.

In the post-harvest handling sessions, best practices for harvesting, sorting, and storage were highlighted to minimize spoilage and maintain quality. Participants learned techniques such as harvesting methods, proper sorting based on maturity and quality, and optimal storage conditions to extend shelf life.

Experts provided in-depth information on the nutritional composition of cashew apples, noting their high vitamin C content and other beneficial compounds. The training also covered essential food safety practices to ensure the hygienic processing and handling of cashew apples and their products.

The training was funded by the European Union (EU), GIZ/MOVE in collaboration with Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, Osun State Ministry of Agriculture and Oyo State Tree Crop Development Department.

It was graced with the presence of these dignitaries; Dr. Dele O. Adeniyi-representative of Cocoa Research Institute of Nigeria, Mr. Babatunde Adewole-the Director of Tree Crop Development Unit (TCDU) of Oyo State, Mrs. Bolanie Emmanuel-the State Coordinator of Nigerian Export Promotion Council (NEPC) and Mrs. Comfort Aremu-the representative of the State Chairman of National Cashew Association of Nigeria.

Participants were also equipped with the skills to develop successful cashew apple businesses. The training covered topics such as market research, product development, costing and pricing, packaging and labeling, and effective marketing strategies, including the use of digital platforms.

Participants were trained in how to make different recipes of the apples, turning them into juice, jam, snacks, and other food products. A field trip to a local cashew farm in Iwo provided hands-on experience in harvesting and post-harvest handling. Participants practiced identifying mature cashew apples, using appropriate harvesting tools, and implementing sorting techniques.

A tasting event on the final day allowed participants to showcase their newly acquired skills by presenting the various cashew apple recipes they had learned to prepare.

The training had positive impacts on the participants and the potential for cashew apple utilization in the region.

The training's success can be attributed to several factors, including the comprehensive curriculum, the expertise of the trainers, and the hands-on practical sessions. However, challenges such as limited access to processing equipment for some participants were noted and are being addressed through partnerships with local equipment suppliers.
