GIZ/MOVE-ComCashew Participates in the Validation Workshop of Nitidae Study on Cashew Sector in Dar, Tanzania

On 12 March 2025, the Validation Workshop of a study conducted by Nitidae, titled “Cashew Sector in Tanzania: Ways towards a Sustainable and Competitive Value Chain” was held in Dar, Tanzania, bringing together various stakeholders in the cashew sector. This included farmer cooperatives and unions, processors, financial institutions, ministries, and development partners such as the EU, GIZ, Netherlands Embassy, and Italian Embassy.

The study was commissioned by the Cashew Board of Tanzania (CBT) and funded by GIZ and the EU. Mr. Mohamed Salifou, Head of Component from GIZ/MOVE-ComCashew, highlighted during the opening ceremony of the workshop key aspects of the Business Support Facility's activities in East Africa, focusing on three main areas:

First, the Matching Grant Fund (MGF). This innovative financial instrument facilitates private investments and promotes the transformation of smallholder agribusinesses through their innovative projects. Second, the Cashew Master Training Program, a cashew leadership academy that provides training on technical cashew and soft skills topics, business coaching, mentoring, and peer-to-peer learning. The full version of MTP for East African countries is planned to take place in the last week of March 2025. Lastly, Policy Support, which involves collaborations with the East African Community (EAC), the German Consulting Group (GFA), and Nitidae to strengthen the business environment and promote sustainable growth in the region.

The Cashew Board of Tanzania (CBT) briefly presented its vision for the cashew sector, aiming to produce 1,000,000 metric tons (MT) of raw cashew nuts (RCN) by 2030, process 100% of the output, achieve $1 billion in revenue, and produce and distribute 15 million quality seedlings annually to empower local farmers and promote sustainable practices.

The session concluded with Nitidae presenting the findings of the study, facilitating a productive Q&A session, and encouraging a group work session to identify key areas for further development. Two working groups focused on production and processing, and their collaborative discussions were shared and examined in the plenary session, fostering a constructive dialogue on future steps.
